Enfield Architectural Tile of a Ship

$ 850.00
This large 10" square architectural tile was made at the Enfield Pottery (1906-1930) in Enfield Pennsylvania. Pressed into the clay is an image of the Spanish Galleon "Santa Maria". The ship tile is covered in a lighter terra cotta red slip which has an ethereal quality that makes it a little pearlescent in places. This, its whopping 1 1/2" thickness, and the deep carving of the image leads me to believe its original purpose was for an outdoor installation. The sun would cast shadows on the carvings which would make it  more visible from a distance. Unsigned but shown in an Enfield catalog from the 1920's as "No. 226 W Spanish Galleon Santa Maria. There is a small surface stain on the lower left but otherwise in excellent unused condition.
