American Encaustic

AETCO LA Foo Dog Tile

$ 495.00
A super tile by the American Encaustic Tile Company (1875-1935) in its Los Angeles CA location depicting a Foo / Fu Dog prowling among the peony flowers. It is made from a faience clay, and molded in high relief and measures 6" square and 3/4" thick. Glazed in cinnabar red, white and jade green, the roundel is framed in a concentric geometric border. A hefty tile and well marked on the back, it is in excellent condition with some rubs on the corners. A rare example.

Foo Dogs are actually mythical lions. They are placed at the entrances of temples and homes to guard the structure and to protect its inhabitants. The peony is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Imagine framing or installing this at the entrance to your home to greet your visitors.
