Angels After the Storm by Columbia Encaustic

$ 225.00
This framed antique tile was made at the Columbia Encaustic Tile Company (1889-1903) in Anderson Indiana. It shows a pair of angels, or putti, standing on the clouds. One is standing in front of a shining sun and holding a lit torch. The other sits and watches a dove chasing a butterfly. It was molded in high relief and covered in a beige and white mottled glaze. The tile measures 6" square and is fully marked on the back. The mold is crisp and the surface of the tile remains shiny, with a rub to the high point of a knee. Framed in wood, the finish compliments the colors in the glaze.

A similar example, albeit with a softer mold, can be seen in The Encyclopedia of American Art  Tile by Norman Karlson, Vol 2 page 190. If you're looking for a nice gift for a collector, ready to hang, from a short-lived company with a limited production, this rare tile might be the answer.
