J & JG Low Art Stove Tile in a Walnut Frame Portrait of a Woman

$ 270.00
A round stove tile by J & JG Low of Chelsea MA with a portrait in profile of a Pre-Raphaelite maiden, modeled in low relief and covered in a blue glaze. It is encased in a walnut frame. Probably once from a piece of furniture or fireplace mantle, the turned wood has a nice original finish. The side edge has 3 small drilled holes hinting at its former life in a larger presentation. The tile measures 4" in diameter. Overall the piece is 6 1/4" in diameter and 1 1/4" thick. Very good condition. Only a small rub to the nose on the tile. The wooden frame has some dings and an age crack. This is from how wood dries and shrinks as it ages, something that experts look for to determine age and authenticity. The wooden frame is certainly the same age of the tile, circa1880's. The last photo shows the tile in the Low catalog as R.1.

This large example would look great on a desk, a paperweight, a trivet, displayed on a tabletop, or with a hanger applied as a nice wall decoration.
