J. & J. G. Low
J & JG Low Tile Panel of Barn Swallow Birds
The J & JG Low Art Tile Company in Chelsea MA was one of the first American tile companies. In the 1880's they manufactured tiles for the American upper classes. This partial tile panel shows a flock of barn swallows diving through the clouds. Rendered in extra high relief it consists of two tiles. One is 6" square, the other 4 1/2" x 6". The top tile is marked on the back " J & J.G. Low Patent Art Tile Works Chelsea Mass USA" and is in very good condition with flakes to two of the bird's beaks. The bottom tile is unsigned and has a chip on the upper left corner and a few scattered flakes to the edge and high points. Probably part of a fireplace surround or larger panel, this piece makes a strong decorative statement on its own.
