Mexican Modernism Tile of a Bird
$ 185.00
This vintage tile is glazed in a semi-gloss white with purposeful crazing and flat black color to depict a bird. An homage to the petroglyphs found scratched into the rocks in the Southwest, this ancient design is Minimalist and decidedly Modernist. Similar images can be found worked into the silver and turquoise jewelry of Native Americans. The tile measures 8" square and nearly 3/4" thick. The color of the clay is similar to the clay used for San Jose Pottery tiles or Mexican tiles. Unsigned, the tile shows some patina of age and is probably from the 1950's or before. The few flat chips around the edges would be hidden of framed and it makes a nice statement on an easel decorating a shelf.
