Antique Wedgwood Barbotine Tile English Daisies

This antique tile by Wedgwood has a central image of English daisies. The background is in a hammered texture with smokey glazing. The central image is made in the barbotine method, where colored slips are hand painted and layered with stencils to give it a raised surface. This method was time consuming and needed skilled hands to produce and was only used for a short period of time. The back mark on this tile was used around 1870. Measures 6" square.
