Les Fils de Chemla Tunisian Tile California Arts and Crafts
Les Fils de Chemla antique tile made in Tunisia in the early 20th Century with a Moorish floral design. Measures 6" square and 3/4" thick. Truly hand made and decorated. The surface is shiny and unworn. Three typical stilt marks on the front. The back is covered in old felt hiding any maker's mark.
During the 1920's building boom in California and other places constructing Spanish Revival architecture a high quality and reliable source of large quantities of tile couldn't be found locally but it was discovered that they could be found in Tunisia. When Santa Barbara was building its courthouse in the 1920's the architects used Tunisian tile, which sparked the expansion of the California tile industry. Le Fils de Chemla produced some of the best and consistent product of the time.
