Moravian Pottery and Tile Works
Locked Squares of Chertsey by Moravian Pottery & Tile
A collection of four Arts and Crafts tiles made by Henry Chapman Mercer's Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown PA. The hand formed and cut tiles measure about 3 1/2" x 3 3/4" and 5/8" thick. The design of the tiles is pictured in the pottery's 1913 catalog as "#148 Locked Squares of Chertsey, Chertsey Abbey, Surrey." Mercer was a world traveler and would recreate the medieval tiles he found in European churches at his own pottery. Never set and unmarked they are in excellent condition with a couple of nicks on the edges.
