Mid Century Italian Tile Soldiers and Horses by Pettucco
This large vintage tile plaque from Italy was hand painted in a naive and modernistic style so popular in the 1950's and early 1960's. The scene is of guards in tall black hats and red coats riding horses in formation in front of a building with ornate doors. The white faience clay was hand cut and roughly textured, which shows through the glaze. It measures 9" tall, 13 1/4" wide and nearly 1/2" thick. The back has incised holes to accommodate a wire hanger. It is marked "ITALY 17/140 - B" Attributed to Giovanni Pettucco and Tolio. The condition is very good but does have some glaze pops and flakes scattered around the surface.
