Flint Faience Tile Virgo Zodiac Man Flirting With Vestal Virgin

An Art Deco tile by Flint Faience of Flint Michigan. The whimsical zodiac design series is inspired by Mayan characters. This hand decorated tubelined image is for the zodiac sign of Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22) and shows the character flirting with a virgin consecrated to Vesta and vowed to chastity, sharing the charge of maintaining the sacred fire burning on the goddess's altar. Measures 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" x 1/2". Excellent condition, silicone on back. Impressed mark.

This zodiac series was designed by Howard Burton (1881-1950) Art Director and Architect for Flint Faience. A set of these was displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1928.
