J & JG Low Pair of Stove Tiles with Children
This set of tiles by the J & JG Low Art Tile Works of Chelsea MA depicts young children with apparatus to make a fire. The boy is holding a bellows and the girl's arms are filled with kindling. Crisp mold in relief the details are clear and covered in a desirable green glaze. Each tile measures 5 1/4" tall and 3 1/8" wide. Fully marked on the back and dated 1884. The condition is very good with the side edges beveled and shaved, most likely to make it fit into its original installation. Small flake on bottom left corner of the boy tile.
Tiles such as this were used to decorate cast iron parlor stoves a source of heating in the Victorian homes of the upper classes.
