Mid Century SECLA Pottery Brutalist Tile

Signed by Luis Ferreira Da Silva (1928-2016) for SECLA Pottery, this impressive tile has a deeply impressed design with thick translucent turquoise blue and green glazes with a fritte glass center. It measures 8 1/4" square and 3/4" thick. Beautifully hand made. Impressed mark on back. Excellent unused condition. There are 2 of these available.

SECLA (Sociedade de Exportação e Cerâmica, Lda) of Caldas da Rainha Portugal was founded in 1947. In the early 1950's SECLA opened a pottery studio where artists could experiment with new shapes and techniques. These plaques were made in the studio, by Ferreira da Silva, one of the most important Portuguese ceramists of the 20th century. In 1960. .SECLA was featured in the US at the Architectural League in New York, where tiles and pottery were included in an exhibition of modern, mid century housewares. In 1958, SECLA was also featured in the Portuguese Pavilion at the Brussels World Expo.
