Antique Sherwin Cotton Tile Bull Terrier Portrait

$ 225.00
An antique English tile c. 1900 designed by George Cartlidge for Sherwin Cotton made in an emaux ombrants process, which renders the image nearly photographic. In the Victorian tradition it shows a pet dog elevated to a status deserving a portrait. This bull terrier is covered in a mushroom grey glaze. Measures 6" square. Marked on the back. Excellent condition. A companion piece shown in the last photo is also available separately.

Emaux Ombrants is the art or process of flooding transparent colored glaze over a stamped or intaglio molded design to a level with the surface. The different thicknesses of glaze produce the lights and shades of the picture. Unlike relief molded tiles the surface of the finished tile is flat. George Cartlidge was a master of this technique, his designs often mistaken by the uninitiated for photographic tiles.
