Grueby Tile Eros
In Greek Epos, AKA Eros is the equivalent of the Roman Cupid. He crouches, holding his bow, ready to make some love. This tile was designed by Addison LeBoutillier while at the Grueby Pottery and Faience Company of Boston MA in the early 1900's. This example dates to the 1920's Pardee period and measures 6" square and 7/8" thick. Made from a red faience clay with a curdled mustard matte glaze in the recesses. Unsigned, pictured in Grueby's catalog as "656 EROS". Minor rub on corner.
