Harris Strong Harlequin Tile

$ 435.00
This large tile by Harris Strong is from his middle mature period of the early 1960's, when he produces some of his best works. The 12" square tile was hand decorated with extensive use of tubelining in a volcanic black fat lava glaze to represent a harlequin. He is masked, has a wide brimmed hat, ruffled collar and a checkered costume. The swirling background is reminiscent of Van Gogh's Starry Nights painting. It was framed at the factory in strips of wood covered in brass at the top and bottom. The back has a hanger and the remnants of Strong's middle period label. Overall dimensions are 12 3/8" and 12" wide. It remains in excellent condition with minimal wear to the brass.

Harlequin is the best-known of the zanni or comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte. His role is that of a light-hearted, nimble, and astute servant. Harlequin has represented a combination of humor and sadness, romance and entertainment.
